About

Alpha Lipoic Acid, ALA, or Thiotic acid is an endogenous antioxidant. It has been used in research to aid in the treatment of diabetic neuropathy/mellitus, dementia, HIV, alcoholic liver disease. It is unique in that it is able to restore oxidized vitamin E, C and glutathione, giving the body more nutrients.

Mechanism of Action

ALA is rapidly absorbed and distributed into various tissues including the heart, liver, and skeletal muscles. In body tissues ALA is reduced to DHLA (dihydrolipoic acid). ALA and DHLA are both antioxidants that scavenge for reactive oxygen species and chelate metals (e.g. iron, copper, cadmium) . DLHA may be able to regenerate oxidized vitamins E, C and glutathione.

Side Effects

  • well-tolerated

  • mild hypoglycemia is rarely reported in diabetics
